CHS Celebrates Fall Athletic Success at Varsity Awards
The Commack High School athletics family gathered on Wednesday evening in the auditorium to celebrate the successes and character of their fall student-athletes and teams.
In all, four teams won undefeated league titles during the fall season — boys soccer, girls soccer, boys cross country and girls volleyball.
Five teams emerged as county finalists.
Athletic director Patrick Friel selected girls soccer coach Joseph Brandofino as the coach of the season, while football's Andrew R. was recognized as male athlete of the season and volleyball's Kaitlin C. was recognized as girls athlete of the season.
Friel also recognized the contributions to the community from the student-athletes. That included the cross country team volunteering at the Burr mini-marathon, teams including girls volleyball and girls tennis raising money for breast cancer research, the football team supporting the marching band at the Newsday festival in Uniondale, and countless student-athletes working the same Cougar Camps that they attended as youngsters.
"I'm sitting around some of the best leaders in our community," Friel said.
