Welcome to the Mathematics Department at Commack High School, where we cultivate a passion for mathematics by providing challenging coursework and access to the International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) programs. Our department is dedicated to nurturing critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills in our students, preparing them for success in an ever-evolving global society. New York State is in the process of implementing the Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards. This transition will be completed by the 2025-2026 school year, when all Regents courses will have fully adopted the new standards.

The 2024-2025 school year will begin the implementation of the Geometry Next  Generation Learning Standards and the regents will be administered on June 11th, 2025, which is before classes end.

The High School grading policies are designed to ensure fairness, transparency, and consistency, reflecting students' understanding and mastery of mathematical concepts. We aim to provide clear criteria and expectations, empowering students to take responsibility for their learning and achieve their academic goals. 

Regents Classes and Elective Classes:

• 85%  Assessments (include quizzes, tests, and projects)
• 15% Student Engagement/Homework  

Enriched Classes, College Classes, IB, AP and PLTW Classes:

• 90%  Assessments (include quizzes, tests, and projects)
• 10% Student Engagement/Homework

Explore our exciting extracurricular options for mathematics, designed to enrich your high school experience and deepen your passion for the subject. Our mathematics department offers a range of opportunities beyond the classroom, including math clubs, computer science clubs and competitive teams.
These extracurricular activities provide a platform for growth, foster a sense of community, and allow you to develop valuable skills that extend beyond traditional coursework.

Freshmen Math Team:  Open to freshmen who have a passion for mathematics and want to be challenged while competing with other students and schools.
Varsity Math Team:  Any sophomore, junior, or senior who has a passion for mathematics and wants to be challenged can apply for the Math Team. Selected students will compete against other students and schools throughout the year.
Computer Science Club: The Computer Science Club promotes interest in and understanding of computer science principles, providing an opportunity for students to share information and expand their knowledge of the growing field of computer science.  Topics are explored during meetings, including programming, computational thinking, web design, cybersecurity, Boolean algebra, digital electronics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and graph theory. The club participates in contests.
American Math Contest:  Sponsored by the Mathematics Association of America and administered to selected students each year.
Math Honor Society:  Open to juniors who have a passion for and excel in mathematics. Students can apply in the fall of their junior year and are inducted in the spring.
Long Island Math Fair:  Sponsored by the Association of Mathematics Supervisors of Long Island (AMSLI) at Hofstra each spring, this program invites students in math research, or those selected for their passion for research and higher-level mathematics, to create research papers and present their findings. Participants compete with students from schools across Long Island.

Algebra, Geometry and Algebra Textbooks
Select Common Core High School and you will have access to the course textbooks. 

JMAP
Students can access prior regents exams and answer keys. Prior regents questions can be sorted by topic and standard.

Paul's Online Notes
Students can access notes and tutorials for higher-level math classes, including College Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus I-III. 

Purple Math
Students can view lessons with videos, guided practice and interactive self-tests. Background lessons are provided to review prior knowledge. Material covered includes fifth grade through College Algebra math.

Math Open Reference
Students can browse by topic and view animated lessons. Geometric constructions are explained through animation and step by step instructions.

Math Doctor Bob
Students can view math videos on topics in higher-level math classes including College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Statistics, Multivariable Calculus.

Art of Problem Solving
Students can view videos on mathematical topics and access worksheets for practice.

Khan Academy
A free resource that provides practice questions, videos, and a personalized learning dashboard to empower students to learn outside of the classroom. Students can select content or courses to study.
