Wood Park Second Graders Plant Seeds, Prepare to Witness Growth in Their Classroom

Wood Park second graders are learning about agriculture right in their classroom.
Shelly Atlas and Cara DeVita’s students planted bibb lettuce, romaine, arugula, gourmet lettuce and basil in the primary school’s tower garden on Wednesday.
The students learned from Plant Up founder Lety Algeri about the different needs of plants, including sunlight, soil and carbon dioxide, before planting the seeds.
They also learned that the vertical tower garden can substitute a different light source for the sun — allowing the assorted lettuce to grow in their classroom.
