Renowned Youth Speaker Spreads Message of Kindness: 'Just Show Up for Somebody Else'

David Flood brought his message of kindness and inclusion to CMS eighth graders on Wednesday morning.
Flood, a nationally renowned youth speaker who lives nearby in Northport, issued three challenges to the students:
• When you are alone this evening, be introspective and ask yourself: Am I the same person one-on-one that I am when I get around my friends, or do I change? And if I change, is it for the better or worse? Are we inclusive or exclusive?
• Thank two adults. No one knows what others are going through, and words of kindness can be so meaningful. And look the adults in the eyes when you speak with them.
• No one eats alone.
On that final challenge, Flood revealed that he carries around a quote from Mother Teresa: “Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest to you.”
Flood also distinguished between awareness and acceptance. He likened awareness to liking a social media post and acceptance to sharing the post.
Awareness is talk. Acceptance is action.
“Just show up for somebody else,” Flood told the students.
