Sawmill Again Claims State's Biggest Cabbage!

For a second straight year, Marion Carll Farm has proven the epicenter of cabbage growing in the state.
After planting her seedling at the district-owned farm in April and then visiting biweekly to weed and manicure her plant, Sawmill student Keelan L.'s cabbage grew to ultimately weigh in at 8.5 pounds.
That resulted in Keelan, now a fourth grader, having the largest cabbage in the state among third graders in the Bonnie Plant Cabbage Program.
Keelan earned a $1,000 scholarship for her agricultural accomplishments.
It marks the second year in a row that a Sawmill student has won the state cabbage-growing competition.
A year ago, Jackson C. won the state-wide competition and earned a $1,000 scholarship.
"Learning how to grow healthy food at an early age teaches kids to value the fun and hard work that goes into gardening," said Al Cheatham, the president and CEO of Bonnie Plants. "We’re always thrilled to share the appreciation and excitement of a bountiful harvest with our students and believe the joy of gardening is something you never outgrow.”
