SEL Family Book Club Takes Shape

School social worker Tricia Sonsire's ambition to share social emotional learning techniques with families as well as students continued to materialize on Tuesday evening.
Wood Park hosted the second installment of the SEL Family Book Club for families from throughout the district.
The families arrived having read Rachel Vail's "Sometimes I'm Bombaloo." The attendees then watched a short video recap as a group upon arriving, and discussed techniques for managing anger — a natural emotion that's neither good nor bad.
The students identified everyday occurrences that can make them feel angry, such as when a sibling plays too roughly or someone cuts them in line at school. They then shared techniques for coping with that anger, such as taking deep breaths or listening to music or briefly going to their room.
The group then divided into two parts — with parents joining Sonsire and the students joining together for further discussion with other experts.
